If we decide
to take a trip along the Mamertino DOC production areas, a wine
also known as the “Emperor’s Wine” since Julius
Caesar drank it, we can set off from the towns on the north-east
part of the Tyrrhenian coast.

VALDINATORREGROTTA
Messina – Palermo motorway
(A20) Exit at Rometta – continue along the S.S. 113 in the
direction of Palermo
- Guided tour of Valdina centre
– Norman Castle - S. Pancrazio Church (XVII Century) –
in the nearby village of Tracoccia, the Madonna delle Grazie and
Madonna dell’Acqua Santa
church dating back to the XVI century, whose miraculous water was
even sent to America.
- Valdina - Fondachello village, tour of Azienda Giovi belonging
to Giovanni La Fauci (tel. +39 090.9942256) – master distiller,
where, among his copper
distilling devices, one can taste his superb muscat, Nero d’Avola,
Malvasia, juniper, nettle and lemon grappas and particular types
of brandies made from prickly pears, apples, cherries and peaches
from Etna. On request the master distiller organizes tours to watch
the distillation process and take part in particular tastings (chocolate
and grappa; cigars and grappa).
- Tour of Torregrotta - San Paolino Church where the seventeenth
century tapestry representing the deposition of Christ
from the Cross is not to be missed. The remains of the ancient Tower
of Castrum can be found in the borough of Torre.
- Tour of wine expert Mimmo Paone’s company (tel. +39 090.9981101),
in via Corso Sicilia in the town of Torregrotta, where one can taste
excellent Mamertino Rosso, Faro and Malvasia delle Lipari DOC wines.

S.LUCIA DEL MELA - S.FILIPPO DEL MELA - MILAZZO

– Palermo motorway (A20) Exit at Milazzo – continue
on the S.S. 113 in the direction of Palermo, follow the signs
for S.Lucia del Mela.
- Guided tour of the historical village of S.Lucia del Mela: Arabian-Swabian-
Aragonese Castle; Cathdral with a marble portal by Gabriele de
Battista
(1485) and the marmoreal group of the Last Supper by Valerio Villareale
(1773- 1854) and where one can see the “Madonna della Neve”
a splendid, radiant sculpture by Gagini; Lavacro dei Saraceni
(a public wash-house for Muslim women); the Ethnographic and Holy
Arts Museum; SS. Annunziata church; S. Cuore church; S. Nicola
church; Cappuccini church, S. Maria Church where there is a priceless
painting by Caravaggio.
- Brief stoppover at Pasticceria Nicotina, in piazza Milite Ignoto
(tel. +39 090.935181) S.Lucia del Mela, to savour the traditional
local nougat and martorana fruit. - Mamertino DOC wine tasting
at an old wine cellar on the Vasari farm in the district of Casale
– S. Lucia del Mela (tel. +39 090.9359956).

Mela, with local dishes: ‘a ghiotta’ stock fish and
black pig;
- Sofia’s Bistrot restaurant in Via Tonnara in Milazzo (tel.
+39 090.9221244) with a full menu of seafood and shellfish specialities
accompanied by various types of Mamertino DOC wines.
- Guided tour of the old town of S.Filippo del Mela and the Azienda
Agricola Celi in S.Filippo del Mela (tel. +39 090.930716) devoted
to producing extra virgin olive oil Valdemone DOP, including a
tour of the oil mill and oil and wine tasting.
- Tour of the Arabian-Norman Castle at Milazzo and the old town
where there are many churches and the archaelogical Antiquarium
(Milazzo museum).
- Trip to Capo Milazzo and tour of the rocky Sanctuary of S. Antonio
from Padua and Faro; walking along the old, salvaged natural paths
one can enjoy breath-taking views.
- Tour of Milazzo town (modern cathedral with necropolis in the
square in front, Trifiletti Theatre, Carmine church, Palazzo Proto,
Palazzo D’Amico, etc.) and walk along the Lungomare Garibaldi
seafront road as far as the Vaccarella area to the Nicotina cake
shop with its wonderful nougats and almond paste.

TINDARI - PATTI - FURNARI
Messina – Palermo motorway (A20) Exit
at Falcone – in the Oliveri – Tindari direction
- Tour of old Tyndaris settlement with Roman amphitheatre, archaelogical
museum and spa, visit to Tindari Sanctuary dedicated to the Miraculous
Black
Madonna from the Orient – view from the Tindari headland of
the Marinello Lakes (sandy beach pools formed, according to legend,
by one of the Black
Madonna’s miracles).
- Tour of the old town of Patti with its Roman villa remains (III
century AD); the necropolis with cave-like tombs in the Monte (X-VIII
century BC) and Canapè districts.
- Mamertino DOC wine tasting at Azienda Agricola Deamone belonging
to Valeria Furnari (tel. + 39 0941 317708) and located in Patti
in the Case Nuove
area.
- Lunch and lodgings at the Agriturismo Borgo Abacena Country Resort

mostfascinating
villages in the Nebrodi mountain area, immersed among the charming
valleys, lush with vineyards and olive groves. This facility offers

Sicilian mountains.
- Tour of the old town of Furnari including S. Antonio from Padua
church(1700), the Seventeenth century Mother Church
– built on the ruins of the Furnari Princes Castle and where
one can admire works of art that date back to the XVI century and
the bell tower.
